Kevin Garnett had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Paul Pierce added 18 points and the Celtics beat New Jersey 86-77 on Friday for their 30th win of the season. Ray Allen also chipped in 16 points as Boston (30-4) matched the 1959-60 champion Celtics for the best start in franchise history.
HOT HORNET
Bobby Jackson made a career-high seven 3-pointers and finished with 25 points, helping New Orleans steamroll Miami 114-88 on Friday. Jackson, who made all nine of his shots, became the first Hornets player ever to make seven 3-pointers without missing one, tying him for third in NBA history for most 3s in a game without a miss, two shy of Latrell Sprewell’s record. The Hornets (24-12) are off to their best 36-game start in team history.
STREAKING
Dirk Nowitzki scored 20 points in just three quarters to help Dallas down Seattle 90-70 on Friday for its season-best sixth straight win. … Luis Scola had 22 points to lead Houston past Minnesota 113-82 for its season-high fifth consecutive victory. … The Los Angeles Lakers downed Milwaukee 110-105 for their season-high fifth straight win.
STRUGGLING
amal Crawford scored 27 points but New York dropped its fifth straight home game, 99-90 to Toronto. The loss was the Knick’s ninth in 10 games overall. … Pau Gasol scored a season-high 43 points, one shy of his career best, and had 11 rebounds but Memphis fell to Golden State 116-104 for its third straight loss.
STRONG IN DEFEAT
Dwight Howard finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds, his NBA-leading 33rd double-double of the season, but Orlando was upended by Denver 113-103 on Friday. … Josh Smith scored 35 points and rookie Al Horford grabbed 19 rebounds but Atlanta was edged by Washington 102-98 in overtime.
LET’S PLAY TWO
Atlanta and Miami must replay the final 51.9 seconds of their Dec. 19 game because the NBA said the official scorer ruled incorrectly that Shaquille O’Neal fouled out. This will be the first time since 1982 the league has sent teams back on the court for a replay. The replay will be held before the teams’ next scheduled game – March 8 in Atlanta.
