CONFLICTED
Billy Donovan is “conflicted” about his decision to leave two-time NCAA champion Florida to coach the Orlando Magic, the NBA team said Monday, and talks will continue about the contract he agreed to last week. It’s unclear whether Donovan has signed the five-year, $27.5 million contract with the Magic. Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley and sports information director Steve McClain declined comment early Monday.
HISTORY MADE
LeBron James finished the six-game Eastern Conference finals – a 4-2 win by Cleveland over Detroit – averaging 25.7 points, 9.2 rebounds and 8.5 assists – numbers only matched in a conference finals by Oscar Robertson (1963), John Havlicek (1968) and Larry Bird (1986).
FLIP STAYING
Flip Saunders will be back as coach of the Detroit Pistons next season, an NBA official with knowledge of the team’s plans told The Associated Press on Monday night. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Pistons haven’t made an announcement about Saunders’ future, said bringing the coach back for a third season is part of Detroit’s retooling plan.
A LOOK BACK
Cleveland and San Antonio will meet in the NBA Finals beginning Thursday. The Spurs were 0-2 against Cleveland during the regular season San Antonio lost its home opener to the Cavs, plus their January matchup in Cleveland. The Spurs held James to 19 points in the second meeting, but the Cavs put three other players in double figures in their 82-78 victory. Two other players scored eight.
SPEAKING
“They wouldn’t be in the finals without LeBron, we wouldn’t be in the finals without Tim Duncan,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich.
