NEW YORK (AP) -Would you believe a player on the New York Knicks would guarantee a victory?
The Indiana Pacers did.
Indiana routed the Knicks 119-92 on Monday night, gaining a bit of extra motivation after hearing that Knicks center Eddy Curry guaranteed a victory – which Curry and the Knicks claim never happened.
“We did talk about it you know, I’m not going to lie,” Pacers star Jermaine O’Neal said. “We all thought it was strange, especially being so early in the season and especially the team struggling the way they’ve been struggling. But I can’t really knock him because they may need that type of spark.”
But it didn’t come from Curry, one of the Knicks’ most laid-back players. He was surprised when he heard about the guarantee from Knicks spokesman Nick Brown, calling it a “coaching tactic.”
“Nobody said nothing,” Curry said. “Nick came and told me. First I ever heard about that.”
No one on the Knicks or Pacers knew where the report of Curry’s guarantee originated, though it may have started as a joke between writers. Knicks spokesman Jonathan Supranowitz said he heard all of Curry’s remarks during the morning shootaround and there was no guarantee.
Not that they always work, anyway.
“It can go either way in this league,” O’Neal said. “The team can come out and play very well or you can guarantee and your team don’t play well and then you kind of look (foolish) a little bit.”
