NEW YORK (AP) -Willis Reed’s New York Knicks jersey from his dramatic comeback in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA finals will be sold at auction June 5 as part of Sotheby’s and SCP Auctions’ sale of three single-owner collections.
After missing Game 6 against the Lakers, Reed limped out of the Madison Square Garden dressing room after the warmups and hit the first two shots of the game for New York in what became a runaway victory for the Knicks’ first NBA title.
The auction also includes items from Casey Stengel’s estate, and Mitsuhiko Fujita’s collection of memorabilia from the 1934 Tour of Japan.
Additional items include a 1931 Lou Gehrig New York Yankees home jersey, a selection of Jim Thorpe’s letters and other materials from his personal archive, and a Walter Johnson signed baseball from the last out of the 1924 World Series.
Among the items being offered by Stengel’s estate are his 1951 World Series ring, Hall of Fame plaque, and his 1969 Mets championship ring, bestowed upon him by the team’s players in honor of their former manager.
Reed’s 1970 Knicks jersey is part of a basketball collection that also features a George Mikan 1947-48 Minneapolis Lakers road jersey, a Bill Russell 1967-68 Boston Celtics home jersey, and a Wilt Chamberlain 1959 Philadelphia Warriors rookie uniform.
