CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -Rod Higgins emerged as a candidate for general manager of the Charlotte Bobcats, where he would be reunited with his former boss Michael Jordan.
Golden State spokesman Raymond Ridder said Tuesday the Warriors granted the Bobcats permission to speak to Higgins, who has served as Golden State’s GM for the past three seasons.
Higgins was assistant GM with the Washington Wizards from 2000-2003, when Jordan was the team’s president of basketball operations. Higgins played in Chicago during Jordan’s rookie season with the Bulls in 1984-85.
Jordan became a part-owner of the Bobcats last June and took over decisions from coach and general manager Bernie Bickerstaff. Bickerstaff stepped down as coach at the end of the season.
He is staying on as an executive vice president and will essentially be Jordan’s top aide.
The Bobcats are looking to fill the role of assistant GM Karl Hicks, who took a job this spring with the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Jordan has quickly brought in former friends and teammates to Charlotte. Longtime confidant Fred Whitfield is now team president of the Bobcats. Jordan’s former Chicago teammate Sam Vincent was hired as coach last week.
The 47-year-old Higgins spent 13 seasons in the NBA as a player. He also spent six season as an assistant coach with the Warriors. He reports to Warriors vice president of basketball operations Chris Mullin.
