Johnson Questionable to face K-State
Head coach Mark Pope indicated that Spencer Johnson (not injury related) is questionable for Saturday’s game against Kansas State, Jay Drew of DeseretNews.com reports. Johnson’s status was downgraded due to his wife going into labor. Pope said that as of now there is no telling whether Johnson will be available against the Wildcats. Johnson has been a key player for the Cougars this season, averaging 10.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. His absence will certainly be felt should he be unavailable. If he does miss Saturday’s game, look for fellow guard Richie Saunders to step into a larger role in Johnson’s absence.
Perry’s Scoring Surge Continues
Tylor Perry contributed 13 points (5-13 FG, 3-8 3Pt), three rebounds, four assists and three steals across 39 minutes during Monday’s 62-56 loss to Texas. Perry’s 13 points were the second-lowest total the senior guard has posted over the last six (19.0 ppg during that stretch). That was thanks in part to failing to make a trip to the charity stripe after averaging 7.0 trips per game over the previous five.
Despite maintaining a career-low field-goal percentage of 34.8%, including just 30.9% from behind the arc, Perry continues to display an aggressive scoring mindset from the point guard position. He shoots between 11 and 16 field-goals in each of his last six games. The low percentage is not ideal, but the senior guard ranks eighth in the Big 12 in scoring (15.1). That’s thanks in large part to placing second in the conference in free-throws made (4.6) and free-throw percentage (91.6%). He’s also added a career-high in assists. He ranks sixth in the conference with 4.5 per game.
