Falcons Surprise Cincy
Chris Knight scored 24 points and Ryan Hamblet’s 3-pointer gave Bowling Green the lead for good with less than two minutes left as Bowling Green held off Cincinnati for a 69-67 win on Sunday.
Hamblet’s basket gave the Falcons a 65-62 lead and came a half-minute after Cincinnati’s Adam Hrycaniuk tied the game with two free throws. Hamblet then went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the last 14.6 seconds to secure the win.
Joe Jakubowski and Nate Miller each scored 10 points for Bowling Green (2-1) to help the Falcons beat Cincinnati (1-2) for the first time in eight tries dating back to 1970.
Deonta Vaughn led the Bearcats with 17 points, including a meaningless 3-pointer from near halfcourt at the buzzer after he missed a possible game-tying 3-pointer with 5 seconds remaining. Cincinnati’s John Williamson scored 14 points, while Rashad Bishop had 12 and Adam Hrycaniuk 11.
Earlier Sunday, Belmont blew a 17-point first-half lead and then came from behind in the last eight minutes to beat Western Carolina 79-70.
The games were part of the inaugural Peggy Cronin Classic, a three-day, six-game tournament honoring the deceased mother of second-year Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin. The four-team round-robin event concluded on Sunday.
