Duke laying too many points to ‘Cuse?

Duke has lost two straight games and is playing its second game in three days but is still laying 11 points against Syracuse tonight. Is the number too high?

The Blue Devils failed to cover as 7.5-point road favorites in a 68-63 loss to Clemson last week, then turned around and lost as an 8.5-point home favorite in a 95-91 loss to Notre Dame on Saturday. But even given the back-to-back losses, Duke is an 11-point home favorite versus Syracuse tonight at 7:00PM ET according to oddsmakers at online sports book BetDSI.

Our College Basketball Public Betting page shows that only 52% of tickets wagered tonight are on Duke, yet the Blue Devils went from -10.5 up to -11 at the betting window. At several online sports books Duke is even -11 with -115 juice, so the spread might not be done climbing.

Why lay that many points on a struggling Blue Devils squad? Well for starters, freshman stars Luke Kennard racked up a season-high 30 points in Saturday’s loss to the Irish and Brandon Ingram finished with 25 points. It was Ingram’s 11th straight game with at least 14 points. Even though they’ve dropped two straight, it’s a positive sign that Duke’s young players are producing.

Duke is also 10-3 against the spread in its last 13 games following an ATS loss, is 7-3 against the number in its last 10 conference games, and is 16-7-1 at the betting window in its last 24 home games. Even though the Blue Devils will be playing on limited rest, they should be plenty focused and motivated to avoid a three-game losing streak. Plus, they’re facing a Syracuse team that is just 1-4 against the number in its last five road games and 7-23-2 ATS in its last 32 games versus the ACC.
