March Madness Predictions: Will Marshall Cover vs. West Virginia? 3/18/18

Marshall vs. West Virginia Prediction

Will the Marshall Thundering Herd cover the point spread Sunday night as a double-digit underdog? They’ll take on rival West Virginia at 9:40 p.m. ET.

Game Snapshot

(721) Marshall Thundering Herd vs. (722) West Virginia Mountaineers

Sunday, March 18, 2018

TV: TBS, 9:40 p.m. ET

CURRENT ODDS

According to oddsmakers from online sports book YouWager, the Mountaineers are 12.5-point favorites to knock off the Thundering Herd tonight while the over/under currently sits at 159.5 points.

LINE MOVEMENT

The Mountaineers opened as 11.5-point favorites to knock off the Thundering Herd but the line has jumped a full point to 12.5 at the majority of online sportsbooks. As for the total, the number hit the board at 159.5 and that’s where it currently sits.

PUBLIC BETTING INFORMATION

As of Sunday morning, 64% of the betting tickets that were wagered at online sportsbooks were on the Thundering Herd to cover the spread. Meanwhile, 59% of the betting tickets wagered online are on the under.

KEY INJURIES

Marshall does not have any player listed on its injury report as of this writing but West Virginia will not have Brandon Knapper, who was lost for the year back in November due to a knee injury.

BETTING STRATEGY

This is an underrated rivalry, as both teams hate each other. The underdog is 9-4 at the betting window in the last 13 meetings between these two teams and the Thundering Herd have been a monster ATS of late. They’re 19-7 against the spread in their last 26 games overall, are 4-1 against the number in their last five non-conference games, and are 4-0 at the betting window in their last four neutral site games.

I don’t think Marshall goes down without a fight tonight. Jon Elmore led Conference USA in points per game at 22.8 and was the fourth-leading scorer among all players in the NCAA tournament field entering play this year. He’s the only Conference USA player averaging 20 points and five assists per game and he has help, too. Ajdin Penava has 130 blocks this season, 21 more than any player in the country. He also has 14 double-doubles on the season, tied for the most in Conference USA. WVU will likely advance to the Sweet 16 but Marshall will give the Mountaineers all they can handle.
