Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog.com had installed UConn as a 3-point favorite over Butler coming into Monday night’s championship game. Thus, the Huskies covered the 3-point spread while the combined score fell well under the posted total of 131.5 points.
The Bulldogs took a 22-19 lead into halftime but sputtered in the second half. Butler had just one player reach double-digits in points scored, which was Shelvin Mack who finished with 13. He also finished with a team-high nine rebounds (Andrew Smith also had nine) and one blocked shot.
As been the case virtually the entire tournament, Kemba Walker paced UConn with another great performance. He finished with a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Jeremy Lamb also contributed with 12 points, while Alex Oriakhi added 11 points.
At the start of March Madness, the Huskies were a 35/1 long-shot to win the entire tournament. Thus, a $100 wager paid out $3,500. Had Butler won at 200/1, the Bulldogs would have paid out $20,000 on a $100 wager.
