One of the four top-25 teams on the schedule Thursday night is struggling Michigan State and it is not just any other game for the Spartans as they are home against their rivals in the Michigan Wolverines at 7:00PM EST. Oddsmakers and online sports book Sportsbook.com have made Michigan State -10.5 point spread favorites in the game at the Breslin Center.
It has been a tumultuous season for the Spartans (12-7, 4-3) as they have seen their preseason No. 2 ranking fade away as they are now hanging onto a top-25 ranking by a thread. In addition, it was announced Tuesday that junior point guard Korie Lucious will not be with the team the rest of the season due to a violation of team rules. Lucious had been struggling with his shot recently and averaged 6.5 points along with 4.1 assists per game, but he has come through in the clutch previously such as in key NCAA Tournament spots last March.
Michigan State has lost two straight games to ranked opponents on the road, falling at Illinois and Purdue. Michigan (11-9, 1-6) is losers of six straight and have seen its NCAA Tournament chances dwindle to slim. The last loss for the Wolverines was a 69-64 home defeat at the hands of Minnesota. According to the latest trends, Michigan State is 2-1 against the spread versus Michigan over the past three seasons.
Kalin Lucas leads the Spartans in scoring at 14.4 points per game, while the Wolverines are paced by Darius Morris as he averages 15.5 points and 7.0 assists per contest.
Also on the card in top-25 action, No. 19 Vanderbilt travels to Mississippi State for a 7:00PM EST start. Vanderbilt is a 7-point favorite. Duke is at home Cameron Indoor Stadium for an 8:00PM EST start versus Boston College. Duke is listed as a 17-point spread favorite. Illinois is at Indiana for a 9:00PM EST start and the Illini are a 4-point favorite.
