CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -Sean Singletary scored 18 points, including a go-ahead jumper with 1:16 to play, and Virginia held on to beat Richmond 66-64 Tuesday night in an opening-round game of the inaugural College Basketball Invitational tournament.
Mamadi Diane had 15 points and Jamil Tucker added 10 to help Virginia (16-15) advance to a quarterfinals matchup against Old Dominion.
Dan Geriot scored 22 points, including 10 during a 16-5 run that gave Richmond (16-15) a 61-49 lead with 8:41 remaining. Virginia answered with a 16-3 run to pull to take the lead on Singletary’s jumper.
Old Dominion 68, Rider 65
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) – Frank Hassell scored 14 points and Old Dominion held off Rider.
Brandon Johnson had 10 points and was the only other player in double figures for the Monarchs (18-15). Rider (23-11) pulled to 66-63 on a 3-pointer by Harris Mansell with 43 seconds to play, but could get no closer.
Ryan Thompson led Rider with 24 points, and his brother Jason had 15 points and 17 rebounds.
Ohio 80, Brown 74
ATHENS, Ohio (AP) – Jerome Tillman scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Ohio overcame a 39-point performance from Brown’s Damon Huffman.
Leon Williams had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Bobcats (20-12), and Bubba Walther finished with 10 points and 12 assists.
Huffman had nine of Brown’s 16 3-point field goals. He scored the first 14 points for the Bears (19-10), and had 22 points by halftime.
Mark McAndrew scored 15 points and Peter Sullivan had 10 for Brown.
Houston 80, Nevada 79
RENO, Nev. (AP) – Robert McKiver scored 22 points and Marcus Cousin made the winning free throw with 26.5 seconds left to lead Houston.
Dion Dowell added 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Cougars (23-9), who advance to a second-round matchup against either Washington or Valparaiso.
Armon Johnson missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer for Nevada (21-12), which had trailed by as much as 10 points the second half. Marcelus Kemp led the Wolf Pack with 24 points, Johnson had 16 and Brandon Fields 15.
Trailing 79-75, JaVale McGee scored inside with 1:33 left for Nevada but missed the free throw. After McKiver missed a 3-pointer, Kemp scored inside to tie the score with 58 seconds left.
