ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -Dave Smalley, who coached the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Navy during more than 50 years in sports at the academy, has died. He was 72.
He died Friday night of complications from cancer, the academy said Saturday.
Navy’s basketball court is named for Smalley, who coached the men’s team from 1966-76. He then began shepherding the women’s basketball program into existence, coaching the women from 1977-89.
“Dave was one of the finest gentlemen and accomplished professionals ever to serve our midshipmen,” athletic director Chet Gladchuk said. “He was respected, appreciated and loved by the thousands who were fortunate to benefit from his friendship.”
Smalley, who was born in Baltimore, graduated from the Academy in 1957. He won a combined six letters in basketball and baseball. After serving five years in the Marine Corps, he returned to the academy in 1962 as an assistant men’s basketball coach.
He succeeded Ben Carnevale as head coach and compiled a 94-130 record in his 10 seasons. His women’s teams went 179-119 and finished with a winning record in 10 of his 12 seasons.
Smalley was appointed assistant athletic director in charge of admissions in 1979. In 2001, he was promoted to senior associate athletic director for admissions, academics and compliance. He held that job until his death.
Smalley is survived by his wife, Gerry; four children, David Jr., Donna, Diane and Danny; and five grandchildren.
