GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -Florida coach Billy Donovan added former Virginia assistant Rob Lanier to his staff Wednesday, filling a spot created when Donnie Jones took the head coaching job at Marshall last month.
Lanier spent the past two years at Virginia and helped lead the Cavaliers to an NCAA tournament berth last season. He also was the head coach at Siena (2001-05) and an assistant at St. Bonaventure (1992-97), Rutgers (1997-99) and Texas (1999-2001).
He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Niagara in 1990 and also coached several teams of college players from the United States that competed internationally.
Donovan offered Lanier a position after the 2006 season, asking him to replace Anthony Grant after Grant took the head job at Virginia Commonwealth.
Lanier turned him down then.
But he didn’t say no twice.
“We’re thrilled to be able to bring in an assistant coach of Rob’s caliber,” Donovan said. “He’s a great teacher of the game, a proven recruiter and will be a fantastic addition to our program.”
