EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) -Backup point guard Jean Cajou scored 27 points off the bench, including 16 of his team’s final 19 points, to lead Mount St. Mary’s over Monmouth 81-67 on Saturday night.
Sam Atupem added 14 points and Shawn Atupem had 10 for Mount St. Mary’s (15-14, 11-7 Northeast Conference). Senior guard Chris Vann managed only nine points in his final regular-season home game, but grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds.
Whitney Coleman and Yaniv Simpson had 18 points each to lead Monmouth (7-23, 4-14).
Cajou hit a 3-pointer from the left wing, scored on a fastbreak layup, made a short jumper, and then swished a 3-pointer from the right wing just before the shot clock expired. He went 9-for-11 from the field and 6-for-6 from the foul line.
Mount St. Mary’s got 54 bench points to wrap up their regular season with a winning record for the first time since 1996-97. The Mountaineers will face fifth-seeded Quinnipiac in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Monmouth will be the eighth seed and play at top-seeded Robert Morris.
