CATONSVILLE, Md. (AP) -Reserve Cavell Johnson had 18 points and a career-high five blocks and Maryland-Baltimore County overcame the loss of leading scorer Brian Hodges in a 69-65 victory over Albany on Wednesday night.
Darryl Proctor had 15 points and eight rebounds and Ray Barbosa added 14 points for the Retrievers (14-7, 6-2 America East), who snapped a six-game losing streak to the Great Danes (9-11, 4-4).
Brian Lillis led Albany with 19 points, 17 coming during the second half, and Jon Iati added 14. The Great Danes have dropped three of four.
UMBC almost wilted after Hodges, whose 16.9 points per game led the Retrievers, was helped off the court after sustaining a left ankle injury with 11:25 left. He had scored nine points.
Johnson’s short jumper with 6:41 remaining gave UMBC a 55-38 lead, its largest of the game, but the Great Danes retaliated with a 16-3 run featuring six points by Tim Ambrose.
Lillis’ 3-pointer from the right wing capped the burst and got Albany within 58-54 with 1:46 to go. The Retrievers didn’t score from the field over the final 3:26 and the Great Danes’ ploy of sending UMBC to the foul line almost worked, as the Retrievers converted only 11 of 19 free throws over the final 1:56. UMBC finished 14-for-24 from the line.
Iati had 11 first-half points, but the great Danes shot 8-for-24 in the first half and trailed 33-25 at halftime.
UMBC opened the second half by hitting six of 10 attempts from the floor, taking a 49-36 lead on Johnson’s 15-foot jumper with 12:09 remaining.
