HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (AP) – Senior center Vladimir Kuljanin scored a team-high 19 points on Friday as North Carolina-Wilmington held off a second half Longwood University charge on the way to a 80-65 Chicago Invitational Challenge victory.
The Seahawks (2-2) snapped a two-game losing streak as guard Chad Tomko and forward Todd Hendley each added 14 points in the third-round tourney match at the Sears Centre. Longwood (2-4) trailed by as many as 24 points in the first half on 17 percent (6-of-34) shooting.
But the Lancers improved to 46 percent (14-of-30) in the second half and climbed to within seven points at 66-59 on guard Ryan Bogen’s three-pointer with 5 minutes, 16 seconds left in regulation. But Tomko replied with a trey and the Seahawks used a 9-4 surge over the next four minutes to lock down the win.
Junior forward Kirk Williams scored a game-high 26 points to pace the Lancers while guard/forward Dana Smith added 15.
Guard T.J. Carter added 13 points for the Seahawks. It was the first meeting between the schools, who have had one common opponent this season.
Longwood, playing its first NCAA Division I season, dropped a 100-49 decision to No. 8 Indiana on Sunday. The Hoosiers beat Wilmington 95-71 on Tuesday.
