WASHINGTON (AP) -What their fathers failed to do 25 years ago, Patrick Ewing Jr. and John Thompson III accomplished on Saturday: They beat pesky crosstown rival American.
As AU celebrated the anniversary of the greatest win in school history, Georgetown made sure there wouldn’t be a repeat. The No. 8 Hoyas recovered from an early six-point deficit and shot 60 percent in a 78-51 win over the Eagles.
Roy Hibbert broke out of a scoring slump with 14 points yet somehow managed to grab only one rebound in 20 minutes, continuing a string of uneven early season performances from the 7-foot-2 preseason All-American. DaJuan Summers scored 16 points to lead the Hoyas (9-1), who bounced back from a 85-71 loss at No. 2 Memphis a week earlier.
Derrick Mercer scored 17 points, and Garrison Carr had 16 to lead American (7-6).
Before the game, American alumni and former players held a brunch to commemorate their 1982 shocker, a 62-61 over the Hoyas on Dec. 15, 1982. The Hoyas, coached by John Thompson and led by Ewing Sr., were ranked No. 5 at the time and would win the national championship the following season.
With Thompson III now the coach and Ewing Jr. in Georgetown’s starting lineup, the Eagles had hope that they could pull the upset again.
Georgetown led 38-28 at halftime and doused any comeback hopes with an 8-3 spurt to open the second half.
Wisconsin 67, No. 9 Texas 66
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Michael Flowers hit a long 3-pointer with 2 seconds to play, then stole Texas’ inbounds pass and tossed it high in the air to run out the clock in the Badgers’ victory.
Texas led 66-64 after A.J. Abrams hit one of two free throws with 11 seconds left. His miss gave the Badgers a last chance and Flowers’ long shot from the right wing stunned the home crowd. He then tipped Texas’ inbounds pass near the baseline, grabbed it and threw it up with 1 second left as he tumbled into the stands.
By the time it came down, the game was over and the Badgers (10-2) had their first win of the season over a ranked team. Brian Butch scored 21 for Wisconsin.
Damion James scored 21 and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Longhorns (11-2), who have lost two in a row after their best start since the 1981-82 season.
No. 12 Marquette 77, Savannah St. 37
MILWAUKEE (AP) – Lazar Hayward and Dominic James each had 12 points and Marquette earned its sixth straight win.
Dan Fitzgerald, who missed the last five games with an injury, added 11 points for the Golden Eagles (10-1).
Hayward had eight rebounds in 19 minutes for Marquette, which opens Big East play at home against Providence on Thursday. Fitzgerald added four rebounds and had four of the Golden Eagles’ 17 steals.
After Savannah State’s Patrick Hardy opened the game with a 3-pointer, Marquette scored the next 13 points.
Reserve Curtis Brown scored nine points for Savannah State (7-11), which trailed 46-19 at halftime.

M extended its winning streak to five.

M 11-5 in the opening minutes of the second half to stretch its lead to 58-35 with about 15 minutes to play.

No. 15 Vanderbilt 92, Tenn-Martin 85
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A.J. Ogilvy had 21 points and nine rebounds, and Shan Foster finished with 16 points for Vanderbilt.
The Commodores improved to 12-0, tying the 2003-04 team for the best start in school history.
Lester Hudson, the NCAA’s third-leading scorer, had 36 points to lead the Skyhawks (5-8), and Gerald Robinson added 25.
The teams were tied at 83 when Foster made a 3-pointer with 3:10 left to put Vandy ahead for good.

No. 21 Clemson 78, Samford 45
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) – K.C. Rivers scored 16 points and Clemson rebounded from its first loss of the season with a dominating victory.
The Tigers’ perfect start ended last week with an 85-82 loss to Mississippi in the final of the San Juan Shootout. They then had a long holiday break to stew over the defeat – and Rivers and his teammates took it out on the Bulldogs (5-6).
Clemson was up 14-0 before the first timeout, nailing five of its first eight shots.
Samford never got the lead back under double digits.
Demontez Stitt finished with 15 points for the Tigers (11-1).
Joe Ross Merritt was Samford’s only player in double figures, finishing with 14 points.
