Kalin Lucas had 17 points and Drew Neitzel added 16 for the No. 7 Spartans (12-1), who tied the school’s 2000-01 Final Four team for the fastest start in Tom Izzo’s 13 years as coach.
The most important player for Michigan State could have been guard Travis Walton, who had 11 of Michigan State’s 31 assists, zero turnovers and three steals. The Spartans won their ninth straight game and wound up perfect in December for the third straight year.
Goran Suton and Durrell Summers had 10 points apiece for the Spartans, who shot 55.2 percent from the field and had better than a 3-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Mike Schachtner scored 20 points and Ryan Tillema 17 for the Phoenix (7-5), which trailed 53-36 at halftime and was down by 24 late in the game.
No. 8 Georgetown 78, American 51
WASHINGTON (AP) – Roy Hibbert broke out of a scoring slump with 14 points and Georgetown shot 60 percent from the field in the win.
Hibbert somehow managed to grab only one rebound in 20 minutes, continuing a string of uneven early season performances from the 7-foot-2 preseason All-American. DaJuan Summers scored 16 points to lead the Hoyas (9-1), who bounced back from a 85-71 loss at No. 2 Memphis a week earlier.
Derrick Mercer scored 17 points, and Garrison Carr had 16 to lead American (7-6).
Before the game, American alumni and former players held a brunch to commemorate their shocking 62-61 win over the Hoyas on Dec. 15, 1982.
Georgetown led 38-28 at halftime and doused any comeback hopes with an 8-3 spurt to open the second half.
Wisconsin 67, No. 9 Texas 66
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Michael Flowers hit a long 3-pointer with 2 seconds to play, then stole Texas’ inbounds pass and tossed it high in the air to run out the clock in the Badgers’ victory.
Texas led 66-64 after A.J. Abrams hit one of two free throws with 11 seconds left. His miss gave the Badgers a last chance and Flowers’ long shot from the right wing stunned the home crowd. He then tipped Texas’ inbounds pass near the baseline, grabbed it and threw it up with 1 second left as he tumbled into the stands.
By the time it came down, the game was over and the Badgers (10-2) had their first win of the season over a ranked team. Brian Butch scored 21 for Wisconsin.
Damion James scored 21 and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Longhorns (11-2), who have lost two in a row after their best start since the 1981-82 season.
No. 11 Tennessee 82, Gonzaga 72
SEATTLE (AP) – JaJuan Smith scored 18 points and Tennessee made up for star Chris Lofton’s cold shooting with its usual strong defense.
Tennessee’s first trip to the state of Washington turned into its best start in seven seasons. The Volunteers are 12-1 for the first time since the 2000-01 team started 16-1.
Relentless, trapping defense from three, ultra-quick guards kept Tennessee in front for all but 30 seconds – and Gonzaga from getting into most of its halfcourt plays. Simply getting the ball across halfcourt or on a pass out to the wing were adventures for the Bulldogs.
Matt Bouldin scored 21 points to lead Gonzaga (9-4), which lost for the third time in five games.
Lofton finished with 11 points on 4-for-13 shooting.
No. 12 Marquette 77, Savannah St. 37
MILWAUKEE (AP) – Lazar Hayward and Dominic James each had 12 points and Marquette earned its sixth straight win.
Dan Fitzgerald, who missed the last five games with an injury, added 11 points for the Golden Eagles (10-1).

After Savannah State’s Patrick Hardy opened the game with a 3-pointer, Marquette scored the next 13 points.
Reserve Curtis Brown scored nine points for Savannah State (7-11), which trailed 46-19 at halftime.
M 54
M extended its winning streak to five.
Aggies coach Mark Turgeon moved into a tie with Billy Gillispie for the best start by a first-year coach in school history at 12-1. Gillispie, now the Kentucky coach, went 12-1 to start the 2004-05 season.

Jack McClinton scored a season-high 30 points for Miami (12-1) but committed seven turnovers in the first game of an Orange Bowl Classic doubleheader.
The Eagles (7-5) are 4-31 against current Atlantic Coast Conference schools, with two of the wins this season. They beat Georgia Tech on Nov. 18.

No. 21 Clemson 78, Samford 45
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) – K.C. Rivers scored 16 points and Clemson rebounded from its first loss of the season with a dominating victory.
The Tigers’ perfect start ended last week with an 85-82 loss to Mississippi in the final of the San Juan Shootout. They then had a long holiday break to stew over the defeat – and Rivers and his teammates took it out on the Bulldogs (5-6).
Clemson was up 14-0 before the first timeout, nailing five of its first eight shots.
Samford never got the lead back under double digits.
Demontez Stitt finished with 15 points for the Tigers (11-1).
Joe Ross Merritt was Samford’s only player in double figures, finishing with 14 points.
