NEW YORK (AP) -Antoine Pearson made a 3-pointer as the clock ran out to give Manhattan a 65-62 win over St. Peter’s on Friday night in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
After the Jaspers’ Patrick Bouli missed a 3-point attempt with time running down, Devon Austin grabbed the rebound along the baseline and fed it to Pearson at the top of the key. Pearson’s shot left his hands with 1.2 seconds left and went through the net as the buzzer sounded.
St. Peter’s (3-5) rallied from 62-54 and tied it on Nick Leon’s layup with 28 seconds left. After a timeout, Manhattan (5-3) maintained possession until Pearson hit the winning shot.
Andrew Gabriel led Manhattan with 15 points. Austin finished with 13 and Pearson added 11.
Darrell Lampley led St. Peter’s with 15 points. Wesley Jenkins had 12.
Neither team led by more than four points in the first half, which ended 28-all. But Manhattan opened the second half with a 10-2 run.
St. Peter’s responded by scoring the next seven points and then built the lead to 46-42 on Raul Orta’s basket with 13:25 left.
After Manhattan went up 47-46, St. Peter’s took its final lead of the game, 48-47, on Akeem Gooding’s free throw with 10:38 left.
