CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -Deon Thompson and Ty Lawson each scored 16 points for No. 1 North Carolina, which scored 25 straight points in the first half of a 93-62 victory over North Carolina State on Saturday.
Tyler Hansbrough had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Tar Heels (17-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who matched the 1997-98 team with 17 straight wins to start the season, the Tar Heels’ best since winning 21 straight to open 1985-86.
Danny Green added 13 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and four blocks for North Carolina, which opened a 43-13 halftime lead.
Courtney Fells had 16 points to lead N.C. State (11-4, 0-1), which shot just 6-for-34 (18 percent) in the first half and got no closer than 26 points in the second half.
No. 5 UCLA 81, No. 4 Washington St. 74
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Freshman Kevin Love had a career-high 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for his eighth double-double and Darren Collison added 18 points as UCLA handed Washington State its first loss of the season.
The Bruins (16-1, 4-0 Pac-10) won their ninth in a row overall and seventh straight over the Cougars.
Derrick Low scored all 24 of his points in the second half for Washington State (14-1, 2-1), which saw its best start in 91 years ended. The Cougars still have just one victory in 51 games at UCLA.
They made it close at the end with nine 3-pointers – five by Low – over the final 5:48, but the Bruins were 17-of-21 from the free throw line.
No. 7 Georgetown 72, Connecticut 69
WASHINGTON (AP) – Roy Hibbert’s uncontested 3-pointer with 4 seconds left snapped a tie and capped his 20-point, eight-rebound performance for Georgetown.
The go-ahead shot kept the 7-foot-2 Hibbert’s career college shooting percentage on 3s perfect: He is 2-for-2, with both taken this season.
The Huskies led 67-61 with about 4 1/2 minutes left after Jerome Dyson’s fastbreak dunk. Consecutive 3-pointers by freshman Austin Freeman and Jessie Sapp allowed the Hoyas (13-1, 3-0 Big East) to tie.
Jeff Adrien led Connecticut (11-4, 2-2) with 18 points.
The Huskies were without coach Jim Calhoun, who missed an entire game for the first time since February 2003. The Hall of Famer was at the arena but stayed in the coaches’ locker room at tipoff because of what the school called flulike symptoms.
M 86, Colorado 69
M to its eighth straight win by at least 15 points.
Colorado (8-7, 0-1) lost its 11th straight Big 12 opener.
The Aggies (15-1, 1-0) led by 15 points at halftime and built their lead to 61-42 after a layup by Bryan Davis about eight minutes into the second half.
Cory Higgins had 15 points for the Buffaloes and Xavier Silas and Richard Roby added 14 apiece.
Missouri 97, No. 12 Texas 84
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – Reserve Keon Lawrence scored a season-high 18 points to lead six Missouri players in double figures in the Big 12 opener for both teams.
Starting guards Jason Horton and Stefhon Hannah combined for 31 points for Missouri (11-5).
Damion James led Texas (13-3) with 27 points, while A.J. Abrams had 21 and D.J. Augustin 17.
Missouri shot 56.1 percent from the field, including 12-of-26 from 3-point range. Texas shot 43.8 percent from the field, making 9-of-25 of its 3-point attempts.
The 97 points scored were a season high for Missouri.
Kentucky 79, No. 13 Vanderbilt 73, 2 OTs
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) – Freshman Patrick Patterson had 23 points and 12 rebounds to lift Kentucky and knock Vanderbilt from the ranks of the undefeated.
Ramel Bradley added 20 points, and Joe Crawford had 17 for Kentucky (7-7, 1-0), which gave coach Billy Gillispie a win in his Southeastern Conference debut.
Shan Foster had 20 points for Vanderbilt (16-1, 1-1) including a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left in regulation that tied the game at 65. A.J. Ogilvy had 16 points and five rebounds to help the Commodores overcome a 16-point deficit.
Bradley’s jumper in the second overtime put Kentucky ahead 77-73, clinching the Wildcats’ first win over a ranked opponent this season.
Ogilvy’s putback with 1.8 seconds left in the first overtime tied it at 72.
No. 14 Butler 72, Wis.-Milwaukee 56
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Freshman Matt Howard scored nine of his 17 points during a 14-0 first-half run that carried Butler to its eighth straight victory.
The Bulldogs (16-1, 5-1 Horizon League), off to the best start in school history, took a 20-point lead early in the second half, held off a brief comeback that brought the Panthers (9-8, 4-3) within 12 and put the game away midway through the final period with three straight 3-pointers, two of them by A.J. Graves.
Pete Campbell added 15 points for Butler, while Graves finished with 11.
Paige Paulsen had 14 points and Deion James added 13 for Milwaukee, which had a six-game winning streak snapped.
No. 15 Marquette 92, Notre Dame 66
MILWAUKEE (AP) – Jerel McNeal had 18 points and Marquette handed Notre Dame its biggest loss in the teams’ 109-game rivalry.
The defeat was the first for the Fighting Irish (12-3, 2-1 Big East) since Nov. 19 and snapped their 10-game winning streak.
Lazar Hayward added 17 points for Marquette (13-2, 3-1) and tied a career high with 11 rebounds while Dominic James added 16 points and seven assists.
Luke Harangody tied his career high with 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Notre Dame which committed a season-high 24 turnovers.
No. 20 Pittsburgh 84, Seton Hall 70
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Sam Young scored 28 points and freshman DeJuan Blair had 20 points and 14 rebounds for Pittsburgh (14-2, 2-1 Big East).
Brian Laing had 17 points for the Pirates (10-6, 0-3) but he left the game early in the second half with an injury and that’s when the Panthers began to pull away.
The Pirates, with only one starter taller than 6-foot-5, lost their 10th consecutive conference road game since upsetting then-No. 8 Pitt at the Petersen Events Center on March 3, 2006. Pitt has won eight of the last 11 in the series, including victories each of the last two seasons.
No. 24 Xavier 68, Fordham 50
CINCINNATI (AP) – B.J. Raymond made his first five 3-point shots and finished with 20 points to lead Xavier to its sixth straight win.
The Musketeers (14-3, 2-0 Atlantic 10) took control by opening the second half with a 16-4 spurt.
Bryant Dunston had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Fordham (6-8, 0-2), which was held to a season-low point total.
No. 25 Miami 78, Georgia Tech 68
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) – Sophomore James Dews scored a career-high 18 points and junior Jimmy Graham matched a career high with 13 for Miami (14-1, 1-0 Big East), which fell behind by 12 points early and then went on a 31-11 run.
Jeremis Smith had a season-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Georgia Tech (7-8, 0-2). It has been six years since the Yellow Jackets had such a poor overall record this late in the season.
