HAMPTON, Va. (AP) -Vincent Simpson scored 24 points, including a 3-pointer from past halfcourt with 1 second left that lifted Hampton to a 77-74 win over South Carolina State on Saturday night.
Hampton (14-9, 8-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) overcame a 12-point deficit, going on a 15-2 run to take a 59-58 lead on a Matthew Pilgrim 3-pointer with 8:37 remaining.
Pilgrim’s tip-in with 5 seconds left gave Hampton a 74-72 lead. South Carolina State’s Jessie Burton was fouled on a 3-point attempt on the ensuing possession. He made two of three free throws to tie the game, setting up Simpson’s heroics for Hampton.
Rashad West added 16 points for Hampton.
Burton finished with 21 points and Jason Johnson had 13 for South Carolina State (8-17, 4-7).
