LOS ANGELES (AP) -Davin Harmeling scored a season-high 19 points and No. 4 Washington State beat Southern California 73-58 on Thursday night to give the unbeaten Cougars their best start in 91 years.
Aron Baynes had 18 points and nine rebounds, Taylor Rochestie added 12 points and seven assists and Derrick Low had 10 points and five assists for the Cougars (14-0, 2-0), who beat USC for just the 12th time in 53 road games.
Washington State completes its visit to Los Angeles on Saturday at Pauley Pavilion against No. 5 UCLA (15-1, 3-0) in the sixth-ever Pac-10 game matching two teams ranked in the top five. The Cougars have won just once in 50 road games against the Bruins.
WSU, the highest-ranked team in the Pac-10 for the first time, hasn’t won a conference championship since 1941. The Cougars are off to their best start since the 1916-17 team won its first 15 games.
O.J. Mayo, the Pac-10’s leading scorer, led USC (9-6, 0-3) with 22 points and seven rebounds.
No. 5 UCLA 69, Washington 55
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Russell Westbrook scored 18 points and UCLA shot better than 52 percent from the field.
The Bruins (15-1, 3-0 Pac-10) got 17 points from Luc Richard Mbah a Moute in winning their eighth in a row.
Jon Brockman had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Huskies (9-6, 0-2), who lost to a ranked opponent for the fifth time this season. They shot 42 percent from the field in falling to 3-42 at Pauley Pavilion since it opened in 1965.
UCLA point guard Darren Collison left the game with 18:03 to play, clutching his left hip and grimacing. He did not return and was diagnosed with a hip contusion.
The game was tied four times in the first 10 minutes before UCLA broke it open with a 27-11 run that ended the half with the Bruins ahead 41-23.
No. 14 Butler 74, Wis.-Green Bay 65
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Matt Howard had 22 points and nine rebounds for Butler in its seventh straight win.
Mike Green scored 18 points, A.J. Graves added 13 and Willie Veasley had seven points and a career-high 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs (15-1, 4-1 Horizon League), who tied the 2002-03 team for the best start in school history.
Terry Evans led Green Bay (9-6, 3-2) with 12 points and 13 rebounds while Mike Schachtner added 11 points.
The Bulldogs made just three 3-pointers, but outrebounded the Phoenix 38-30 and outscored them 29-10 from the free throw line.
No. 21 Wisconsin 70, Illinois 60
MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Trevon Hughes scored 22 points and Brian Butch added 16 as Wisconsin gave the Illini their first four-game losing streak under coach Bruce Weber.
Illinois (8-8, 0-3 Big Ten) managed to hang around for much of the game by grabbing 13 offensive rebounds while limiting Wisconsin (13-2, 3-0) to just four and shooting 6-for-10 from behind the 3-point line, well above the 28 percent they were shooting entering the game.
The Badgers were finally able to take charge midway through the second half. Consecutive 3-pointers by Jason Bohannon and Hughes sparked a 16-5 run over the next five minutes that put Wisconsin up 60-46.
Calvin Brock and Trent Meacham both had 14 points for Illinois.
No. 23 Stanford 66, Oregon St. 46
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Lawrence Hill had 13 points and Brook Lopez had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 23 Stanford.
Anthony Goods added 12 points for the Cardinal (13-2, 2-1 Pac-10), who have beaten the Beavers in 16 of the last 17 meetings.
Freshman Omari Johnson had 11 points and eight rebounds but was just 4-of-14 from the field for the Beavers (6-9, 0-3), who had a season-low point total and shot 30.4 percent. The loss was the fifth straight for the Beavers.
The Cardinal opened the game on a 15-2 run and was ahead 39-20 at halftime.
