LAS VEGAS (AP) -Jonathan Tavernari hit five 3-pointers while scoring a career-best 29 points, and Brigham Young capitalized on No. 6 Louisville’s injuries and weariness for a 78-76 victory Friday night in the Las Vegas Invitational.
Trent Plaisted added 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Cougars (5-0) as they held a narrow lead for most of the game with the inside-outside punch of their top two scorers, who scored all but six of BYU’s second-half points.
Louisville is the highest-ranked opponent beaten by the Cougars since Dec. 21, 1965, when BYU knocked off No. 2 St. Joseph’s.
Derrick Caracter scored 24 points and Earl Clark added 19 for the Cardinals (3-1), but Clark missed a potential tying 3-pointer with 3 seconds to play.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) – Chris Lofton scored 19 points, JaJuan Smith made five free throws in the final 36 seconds and Tennessee held off West Virginia in the semifinals of the StubHub! Legends Classic.
Wayne Chism added 17 points and Smith finished with 15 for the Volunteers (5-0), who kept letting the Mountaineers (2-1) back in the game after seeming to take control.
Newark native Da’Sean Butler had 16 points to lead West Virginia. Darris Nichols added 15 and Alex Ruoff had 14.
No. 8 Indiana 70, Illinois State 57
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (AP) – Freshman star Eric Gordon scored 31 points, the third time in four games he’s hit for at least 30, and Indiana held off a second-half charge to beat Illinois State in the Chicago Invitational Challenge.
The Hoosiers (4-0) have won their first four games for the first time since the 2002-03 team went 8-0.
Levi Dyer scored 18 points for Illinois State (3-1), which was seeking its first victory over a Top 10 opponent since the 1983-84 season.
No. 15 Texas 102, New Mexico State 87
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) – A.J. Abrams had career bests of 31 points and nine 3-pointers to lead Texas to a victory over New Mexico State in the semifinals in the StubHub! Legends Classic.
D.J. Augustin added 25 points, Connor Atchley had 15 and the Longhorns (4-0) hit 16 3-pointers in a wide-open contest that paired schools that played a first-round game in the NCAA tournament in March.
Jonathan Gibson had 21 points to lead New Mexico State (2-3) in the game at the new Prudential Center. Justin Hawkins added 19, Paris Carter had 14 and Hatila Passos 13 for the Aggies, who never overcame an early 21-point deficit that resulted when they had trouble handling Texas’ pressure defense.
M 70, Ohio St. 47
M (6-0) held Ohio State to one field goal in the first 11 1/2 minutes of the second half in the championship game of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
The Aggies were ahead 31-25 at halftime and then turned on the defense, holding the Buckeyes (3-1) to 1-for-17 shooting to open the second half at Madison Square Garden.
Butler had 17 points for the Buckeyes.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Sam Young started Pittsburgh (5-0) on an early 22-point run with a one-handed dunk, a 3-pointer from the baseline, a blocked shot and a steal and the Panthers rolled over Buffalo.
Vadim Fedotov scored 13 points for Buffalo (2-3), which nearly upset Pitt last season before dropping a 70-67 home-court decision when the Panthers were ranked No. 2.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) – Freshman Michael Beasley had 30 points, Jacob Pullen added 19 and Kansas State beat Central Florida (2-2) in the Old Spice Classic.
Clent Stewart made two free throws and Darren Kent hit a 3-pointer to put Kansas State (4-1) ahead 70-65 four minutes into overtime.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – Randal Falker scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half and Southern Illinois (3-0) beat Mississippi State in the Anaheim Classic.
Jamont Gordon led Mississippi State (3-2) with 20 points, becoming the first player to score 20 or more against the Salukis in nine games dating to last season.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) – Scottie Reynolds scored 21 points and Villanova (4-0) beat George Mason in the Old Spice Classic.
George Mason got 25 points from Folarin Campbell. The Patriots (4-1) were looking to open a season with five consecutive wins for the first time in school history.

NEW YORK (AP) – Freshman Donte Greene scored 25 points and Syracuse (4-1) overcame some poor free-throw shooting over the final two minutes to beat Washington in the third-place game of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Quincy Pondexter had 20 points and 15 rebounds for Washington (3-2), while Justin Dentmon scored 16 points.
No. 22 Butler 84, Virginia Tech 78, OT
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Mike Green scored 12 points and had a key assist in overtime and Butler (5-0) beat Virginia Tech in the semifinals of the Great Alaska Shootout.
Virginia Tech (2-1) got 21 points from freshman Jeff Allen, who tied the game with 14 seconds left in regulation but missed a free throw that would have given Virginia Tech the lead.
No. 23 Virginia 100, Penn 85
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Adrian Joseph had 23 points and 11 rebounds, Sean Singletary scored 16 points and No. 23 Virginia (5-0) was unstoppable early on its way to a win over Penn in the Philly Hoop Group Classic.
Remy Cofield had 20 points for the Quakers (1-4).
Florida St. 65, No. 25 Florida 51
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) – Jason Rich had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Toney Douglas added 10 points and the Seminoles (5-2) beat the Gators to snap the two-time defending national champions’ 15-game winning streak.
Walter Hodge (11 points) and freshman Chandler Parsons (10) were the only players in double figures for Florida (5-1).
