NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -D.J. Augustin scored 23 points, A.J. Abrams had 21 and No. 15 Texas shot 64 percent from the field in routing No. 7 Tennessee 97-78 in the championship game of the StubHub! Legends Classic on Saturday night.
Connor Atchley added a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds, Justin Mason had 21 points and the Longhorns (5-0) continued to show they are going to be a force even with Kevin Durant now playing in the NBA.
Chris Lofton had 18 points to lead Tennessee (5-1), which was limited to 39 percent shooting from the field. JaJuan Smith added 13 and Tyler Smith had 11.
This was supposed to be the biggest test for Rick Barnes’ young team, which starts three sophomores and two juniors.
Tennessee (5-1) was undefeated, had Lofton, the preseason All America at guard, and was coming off an impressive win over West Virginia the night before at the new Prudential Center.
No. 1 North Carolina 73, BYU 63
LAS VEGAS (AP) – Tyler Hansbrough scored 21 points, Wayne Ellington hit a key 3-pointer with 2:06 left and the Tar Heels made a late surge for a victory over BYU in the final of the Las Vegas Invitational.
Ellington scored 15 points and Danny Green added 14 for North Carolina, which barely got off to its first 5-0 start since coach Roy Williams’ first season in 2003-04.
Jonathan Tavernari scored 18 points on six 3-pointers for the Cougars (5-1), who knocked off No. 6 Louisville on Friday night with the tremendous inside-outside punch of Tavernari and Trent Plaisted, who had 24 points against the Tar Heels.
North Carolina finished the game on an 11-2 run.
No. 6 Louisville 64, Old Dominion 53
LAS VEGAS (AP) – Terrence Williams scored 20 points, Derrick Caracter added 13 and Louisville rebounded from its first loss of the season with a victory over Old Dominion in the Las Vegas Invitational.
Earl Clark had 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Cardinals (4-1).
Gerald Lee scored a career-high 20 points for the Monarchs. Brian Henderson added 14 points on a poor shooting night as Old Dominion kept it close until Louisville closed with a 14-5 run over the final 4 1/2 minutes.
Xavier 80, No. 8 Indiana 65
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (AP) – C.J. Anderson and B.J. Raymond scored 19 points apiece, and Xavier handed the Hoosiers their first loss, beating them in the final of the Chicago Invitational Challenge.
Indiana’s super freshman Eric scored 20 points, just his second game with fewer than 30, while hitting 4 of 12 shots. D.J. White did his best to pick up the slack with 16 points and 10 rebounds, but he had little help.
Xavier (4-1) outscored Indiana (4-1) 13-3 over the final 3:54 of the first half to turn a one-point advantage into a 40-29 lead, and the Musketeers maintained control the rest of the way.
No. 9 Washington State 71, MVSU 26
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – Caleb Forrest scored a career-high 13 points and Washington State beat Mississippi Valley State in the Cougar Hispanic College Fund Challenge.
Kyle Weaver added 13 points and Aron Baynes grabbed nine rebounds as Washington State (5-0) dominated the shorter Delta Devils from the opening buzzer.
Carl Lucas, at 6-foot-5 one of MVSU’s tallest players, scored 18 points to lead the Delta Devils (0-6).
Washington State has held four of its five opponents under 55 points this season.
No. 10 Michigan St. 75, Oakland 71
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) – Goran Suton had a career-high 20 rebounds and scored 15 points and Raymar Morgan added 20 points to help Michigan State beat Oakland.
The Spartans (4-1) trailed 25-18 with 5:47 left in the first half before using a 15-2 run to take a 33-27 edge at the break.
Brandon Cassise led Oakland (2-3) with 20 points, including five 3-point baskets. Derick Nelson added 19 points and nine rebounds.
No. 12 Oregon 110, San Francisco 79
EUGENE. Ore. (AP) – Maarty Leunen had 18 points and 10 rebounds, seven players scored in double digits and Oregon beat San Francisco.
Tajuan Porter added 17 points for Oregon (5-1), while Malik Hairston scored 16, Bryce Taylor had 15, Joevan Catron 14, LeKendric Longmire 11 and Kamyron Brown had 10 points. Catron also had 14 rebounds.
The Ducks’ point total tied for the sixth highest in program history.
Manny Quezada scored a season-high 30 points, and Dior Lowhorn added 29 points for the Dons (2-3).
No. 14 Gonzaga 82, Virginia Tech 64
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Abdullahi Kuso had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Gonzaga defeated Virginia Tech for third place in the Great Alaska Shootout.
A.D. Vassallo scored 20 points for the Hokies (2-2) and Deron Washington had 11.
Matt Bouldin scored 20 points and shot 6-for-8 from beyond the arc for Gonzaga (5-1).
Seton Hall 74, No. 23 Virginia 60
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Brian Laing scored 25 points and Seton Hall knocked off Virginia to match their best start in seven seasons and win a share of the Philly Hoop Group Classic.
Jeremy Hazell added 11, including a crashing 3-pointer that sent the neutral-site crowd into a frenzy, to help the Pirates win their first five games for the first time since the 2000-01 season.
Sean Singletary finished with 23 points and Mamadi Diane scored 12 for Virginia (5-1).
No. 24 Clemson 96, Gardner-Webb 67
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) – Cliff Hammonds had 16 points and seven rebounds and Clemson handed Gardner-Webb its worst loss of the young season.
Terrence Oglesby scored 15 points, making three of four 3-pointers, and Trevor Booker also had 15 for the Tigers (5-0), who shot 57.9 percent (11-of-19) behind the arc.
Nate Blank led Gardner-Webb (4-4) with 16 points, and Thomas Sanders added 15 points and six rebounds.
No. 22 Butler 81, Texas Tech 71
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Mike Green scored 23 points and No. 22 Butler relied on its 3-point shooting to win the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.
Butler (6-0) made 16 3s Saturday and set the tournament record with 47 3-pointers in three games, smashing UC-Irvine’s mark of 34 set in 1990.
A.J. Graves was 6-of-8 for 3-pointers and had 18 points, and Green made all four of his shots from beyond the arc for Butler.
Zeno Martin led Texas Tech (4-2) with 17 and John Roberson added 15.
