CINCINNATI (AP) -With No. 17 Xavier missing one of its best front-line players, Derrick Brown led the Musketeers to a painful but satisfying victory over their crosstown rival.
Brown scored 11 points in the final 7 minutes Wednesday night, rallying Xavier to a 64-59 victory over Cincinnati.
Brown, needed more than ever after senior forward Josh Duncan landed hard and left the game in the second half, put Xavier (8-1) ahead to stay 55-53 on his driving dunk with 2:01 to go. He also hit a pair of free throws as the Musketeers extended it to 59-53 and held on.
The sophomore forward had a pair of rebounds in the final, frantic minute, which brought the Musketeers their eighth victory in their last 11 games against Cincinnati (4-5), located 3 1/2 miles away on the other side of town.
Brown finished with a season-high 17 points, leading an offense that struggled to score until it absolutely had to in the closing minutes. There were five lead changes in the last six minutes alone.
No. 20 Vanderbilt 91, DePaul 85, OT
ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) – Shan Foster and A.J. Ogilvy came through after struggling most of the night, and Vanderbilt rallied to remain undefeated.
At 10-0, Vanderbilt is off to its best start since the 2003-04 team won its first 12. But this one didn’t come easily.
The Commodores trailed 58-40 early in the second half, but came roaring back. They finally tied it at 79 when Ross Neltner whipped a pass to Ogilvy underneath for a layup with 22 seconds left in regulation.
Foster and Ogilvy were non-factors for most of the night, but both finished with 19 points.
Draelon Burns led DePaul (2-4) with 24 points, while Mac Koshwal scored 21.
No. 25 BYU 88, Lamar 66
PROVO, Utah (AP) – Lee Cummard scored a career-high 27 points and Brigham Young won for the 36th straight time at home.
Trent Plaisted added 22 points and Jonathan Tavernari scored 11 for the Cougars (8-2), who held a double-digit lead through most of the game.
Lamar Sanders scored 11 to lead Lamar (3-6), which was taunted with “air-ball” chants from the Cougar fans for most of the night. It was so bad that Sanders was about a foot short on a free throw in the second half as the game was getting out of hand.
