MILWAUKEE (AP) -Dominic James and Jerel McNeal scored 18 points each and No. 10 Marquette beat Coppin State 89-42 on Friday night.
Marquette (9-1) held Coppin State scoreless for more than 7 minutes during a dominant 22-0 run that put the game out of reach midway through the second half, playing suffocating defense against a team that had been held under 40 points in its previous two games.
Lazar Hayward added 17 for the Golden Eagles, who have won five straight since losing to Duke in the Maui Invitational.
Brian Chesnut scored 13 to lead Coppin State (3-9), which lost its seventh straight and remained winless on the road.
No. 15 Clemson 90, DePaul 74
GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico (AP) – Trevor Booker scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Clemson over DePaul in the San Juan Shootout.
Booker was one of six players in double figures for the Tigers (10-0), who got 15 points from Cliff Hammonds and 14 from Demontez Stitt.
Clemson, who trailed by one at the break, took control by opening the second half with a 19-4 run, capped by Hammonds’ 3-pointer that put the Tigers ahead 59-45 with 14:45 left. Stitt started the run with seven consecutive points.
Draelon Burns led DePaul (2-7) with 27 points. Karron Clarke added 14 and Dar Tucker had 13.
No. 21 BYU 70, S. Utah 55
PROVO, Utah (AP) – Jonathan Tavernari scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half and Brigham Young extended its home winning streak to 38 games, the longest active streak in the nation.
A 9-2 run midway through the second half gave the Cougars (10-2) a 53-37 lead, the largest of the game. The T-Birds (2-10) pulled within nine points with 5:50 left, but could get no closer.
Both teams took a while to heat up, and 5 minutes into the game BYU led just 3-2. Once BYU got warm, Sam Burgess’ consecutive baskets spurred a 9-0 run by the Cougars, giving them a 28-15 lead with 2:54 remaining in the half.
Davis Baker and Geoff Payne led Southern Utah with 15 points each.
