MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -Willie Kemp scored 14 points and keyed a first half Memphis rally, leading the No. 2 Tigers to an 82-67 victory over Tulsa on Wednesday night in their first game since their only loss.
Kemp was 5-of-10 from the field, including 4-for-7 outside the 3-point arc, as five Tigers scored in double figures. Doneal Mack and Shawn Taggart scored 12 points apiece, while Robert Dozier added 11 points and eight rebounds. Antonio Anderson finished with 10 points.
Ray Reese led the Golden Hurricane with 18 points and eight rebounds. Ben Uzoh finished with 17 points and Calvin Walls added 10.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Tulsa.
Memphis, which took its first loss of the season Saturday against Tennessee, made a fast start to clear its mind about dropping from the nation’s top spot for the first time in six weeks. The Tigers (27-1, 13-0 Conference USA) shot well and protected the ball while maintaining at least a 20-point lead through much of the second half.
No. 6 Kansas 75, Iowa State 64
AMES, Iowa (AP) – Darrell Arthur had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Mario Chalmers and Brandon Rush each added 15 points for Kansas. The Jayhawks (25-3, 10-3 Big 12) led by as much as 22 midway through the second half, but had to hold off the Cyclones (14-14, 4-9) down the stretch. Kansas let a 57-35 lead dwindle to 64-55 with 4:04 to go as Iowa State went on a 20-7 run.
The hole was too deep for the Cyclones. Chalmers hit a 3 that effectively killed Iowa State’s momentum, and Arthur added a layup to make it 69-57 with 2:08 left.
Wesley Johnson had 20 points and Jiri Hubalek added 14 for Iowa State, which has lost eight of its last 10 and appears headed for its second straight losing season.
Kansas has now won six straight over Iowa State. With the loss, Cyclones second-year coach Greg McDermott is 0-9 against ranked opponents.
No. 11 Georgetown 64, St. John’s 52
WASHINGTON (AP) – DaJuan Summers made five 3-pointers and scored 21 points to lead No. 11 Georgetown to a 64-52 win against St. John’s on Wednesday night.
Georgetown (23-4, 13-3 Big East) moved a half-game ahead of Louisville for sole possession of first place in the Big East. The lead may be short-lived: Louisville plays third-place Notre Dame on Thursday night.
Georgetown is 15-0 at home and holds a five-game winning streak against St. John’s (10-17, 4-11).
Roy Hibbert scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half. Summers was 5-of-8 on 3-pointers, giving him a better mark from the outside than he had at point-blank range. He missed two dunks in the first half, including one on a fast break that bounced off the back of the rim into the courtside seats.
Anthony Mason Jr. scored 12 points and Justin Burrell had 10 for St. John’s.
No. 7 Duke 71, Georgia Tech 58
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) – Gerald Henderson and DeMarcus Nelson both scored 15 points and No. 7 Duke moved into a first-place tie in the Atlantic Coast Conference with North Carolina.
Kyle Singler added 13 points and Greg Paulus had 11 to help the Blue Devils (24-3, 11-2) improve to 15-0 at Cameron Indoor Stadium this season and win their second straight since a two-game losing streak on the road.
Matt Causey and Gani Lawal had 10 points each to lead the Yellow Jackets (11-15, 4-8), who lost their fifth straight and were denied their first victory at Cameron since 2004. Georgia Tech’s leading scorer, Anthony Morrow, who entered averaging 14.3 points, was held to nine on 4-of-9 shooting.
No. 16 Purdue 65, Minnesota 53
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – E’Twaun Moore scored 22 points and No. 16 Purdue grabbed a tie for the Big Ten lead. Robbie Hummel had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Keaton Grant added 11 points for Purdue (22-6, 13-2 Big Ten), which is tied with Wisconsin and Indiana for the conference lead.
Lawrence McKenzie led Minnesota (17-10, 7-8) with 13 points. Dan Coleman had 10 points and 13 rebounds and Spencer Tollackson had 10 points in Minnesota’s second-lowest scoring game of the season.
It was Purdue’s first game since a Feb. 19 loss at Indiana, a game that halted an 11-game winning streak. The victory over Minnesota gave the Boilermakers their best start since the 1997-98 season.
