Armed Forces Bowl Free Pick
Dallas, TX (The Spread) – Making its first bowl appearance since 1996, Army will take on a SMU team that coach June Jones has revived after the program suffered through a 25-year bowl absence. The two teams will square off at Noon today in the 2010 Armed Forces Bowl. Continue reading for odds, picks and more.
According to latest college football odds and oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com, SMU opened as an 8-point favorite over Army but the odds have since dropped to 7. The over/under total is now 51.5 after opening at 52.
The Black Knights enter Thursday’s game with a 6-6 record and have failed to cover in seven of their last 12 games. The over has hit in their 12 overall games this year, as they’ve allowed 25.2 points against.
The Mustangs finished the regular season with a winning record at 7-6 and went 6-6-1 against the spread according to latest college football trends. The under hit in seven of their 13 games this year, as they averaged 26.6 points per game and 26.4 points against.
Armed Forces Bowl Free Pick:
SMU can score in a hurry thanks to quarterback Kyle Padron, running back Zach Line and receiver Aldrick Robinson, so if Army gets into a shootout it’ll most likely lose. That said, the Black Knights can put points on the board too thanks to their triple-option attack and most importantly, they know how to bleed the clock. Padron can’t help the Mustangs reach the end zone if he’s standing on the sidelines for most of the game. We think Army’s grind-it-out style will frustrate SMU’s offense, which will go cold at times. Don’t forget too that Army, despite allowing over 24 points a game this year, has a couple of NFL prospects on defense in tackle Michael Gann and linebacker Joshua McNary. The Black Knights will hold their own and considering this will be their first bowl appearance since ’96, they’re going to be fired up. Our pick is Army +7.
