Auburn Favored Over Oregon
While the final BCS numbers aren’t in yet, it’s clear that Auburn will face Oregon in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, where the Tigers will be favored.
According to opening bowl odds and oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com, Auburn is a 2.5-point favorite over Oregon for the 2011 BCS National Championship Game. The over/under total opened at 74.5 points for the title game.
Cam Newton and the Tigers have been on an amazing run this season. They weren’t even ranked in the top 20 in the AP Top 25 in preseason (they were 22nd), but they slowly moved up the rankings with each passing win.
The Ducks ranked 11th in the AP Top 25 at the beginning of the year, but it was clear from the start that they were ranked too low. They blew out New Mexico 72-0 in their opener, then went on the road and crushed Tennessee 48-13. They also hammered No. 9 (at the time) Stanford 52-31 on October 2 and then beat No. 24 (again, at the time) USC 53-32 on October 30.
The only team to give LaMichael James and Oregon any trouble this year was Cal, which the Ducks beat 15-13 on November 13. Arizona also gave the Ducks a run for their money, but Oregon exploded in the second half to beat the Wildcats 48-29. They also defeated in-state rival Oregon State 37-20 in the season-ending Civil War on December 4.
Auburn faced a couple of stiff tests earlier and has been winning nail-bitters ever since. They defeated Mississippi State 17-14 in Week 2, then narrowly beat a pesky Clemson team 27-24 in overtime. They trailed against South Carolina on September 25, but beat the Gamecocks 35-27 with a second-half surge.
Arkansas also gave the Tigers trouble, but Auburn again turned it on in the second half and wound up crushing the Hogs, 65-43. LSU gave the Tigers fits the next week, but the Tigers hung on for 24-17 victory.
Ole Miss proved to be a thorn in Auburn’s side, but the Tigers once again raced out to a big lead in the fourth quarter behind Newton, and won the game 51-31. The Tigers also defeated Georgia 49-31 and despite falling behind 24-0 in the second quarter against Alabama, Auburn put together an impressive second half come back to beat the Tide 28-27 in Tuscaloosa. The Tigers then capped off their season with a 56-17 win over South Carolina in the SEC Championship Game.
Now the Tigers will meet the Ducks in what should be an outstanding 2011 BCS National Championship Game matchup.
