Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog have made Luck a 9/2 favorite to win the 2011 Heisman Trophy. Luck was the runner up last year for the prestigious award behind Auburn’s Cam Newton and as soon as he decided to return to Stanford for his season year, he (Luck) was a shoe-in to be favored to take home the Heisman in 2011.
Luck passed for 3,338 yards in 2010, racking up 32 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. He also combined for over 3,700 total yards of offense, was named Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year and took home the MVP award in the 2011 Orange Bowl (where Stanford crushed Virginia Tech, 40-12).
Standing in Luck’s way this year is Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones, who has the next best odds to win this year’s Heisman at 13/2. The redshirt junior won the 2010 Sammy Baugh Trophy, which is awarded annually to the nation’s top college passer. Jones racked up an amazing 4,718 passing yards and threw for 38 touchdowns last season for the Sooners, who went on to crush Connecticut 48-20 in the Fiesta Bowl.
South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore has 7/1 odds to win the 2011 Heisman Trophy. Lattimore took home All-America Second Team honors in 2010, although his season ended on a sour note. He rushed for minus-1 yards on one carry and caught three passes for 48 yards before being injured on a pass reception in which he lost a fumble in a 26-17 defeat to Florida State in the 2010 Chick-fil-A Bowl.
Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson and Oregon running back LaMichael James are both 15/2 to win this year’s Heisman, respectively. Robinson racked up 502 yards of total offense against Notre Dame in just his second start at quarterback last year, although he struggled against top Big Ten competition. It’ll be interesting to see how he performs out of Rich Rodriguez’s offense. (RichRod was fired after the season.)
James was one of the heroes for Oregon in the 2011 National Championship Game against Auburn. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Duck only rushed for 49 yards on 13 carries but he caught four passes for 39 yards and scored two touchdowns in the 22-19 loss. For his career, he’s rushed for 3,277 yards and has scored 35 rushing touchdowns.
Alabama running back Trent Richardson has 12/1 odds to win the 2011 Heisman Trophy, while Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon, Boise State QB Kellen Moore, Arkansas tailback Knile Davis and Oklahoma WR Ryan Broyles are all 15/1, respectively.
