Oregon is coming off a 12-2 season, its second-straight 12-win campaign. Chip Kelly has led the Ducks to at least 10 wins in all three seasons as coach. Arkansas State went 10-3 last season under coach Gus Malzahn, its best showing in over a decade. This is the first meeting between these two teams and Oregon is 18-1 in its last 19 home openers with an average margin of victory of 36 points.
Trends show that Arkansas State has covered the point spread odds in their last 6 games in September and in 10 of their last 13 games overall. Oregon is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games against Sun Belt opponents, but only 1-3-2 ATS in their last six home games.
According to oddsmakers, Oregon is the clear favorite in this game at home. The Ducks have been given a point spread of -37 against Arkansas State. The over/under odds for the game have been set at 67 points (View Matchup). The point spread odds opened at Oregon -33 points early in August. Since then, the spread has been on a steady climb to its current 37-point margin.
Oregon has been one of the top offenses in the country under Kelly. Last year, the Ducks averaged 46.1 points and 523 yards per game. The offense should be very strong again this year, especially with speedy backs Kenjon Barner and De’Anthony Thomas. Oregon has a new quarterback in Marcus Mariota, who is just a redshirt freshman, but he will add to the rushing attack. Defensively, Oregon could improve on its 24.6 points and 390 yards allowed per game from a year ago. The Ducks have six starters back on defense, including a pair of 100+ tacklers and end Dion Jordan, who had 7.5 sacks in 2011.
Arkansas State can be a dangerous team because of its offense. The Red Wolves averaged 32.5 points and 448 yards per game in 2011. Leading the way for that production was quarterback Ryan Aplin, who threw for 3,588 yards. Aplin is back for his senior year and leading an offense with six starters back. Defensively, Arkansas State allowed just 20.8 points per game in 2011, but this will be an offense unlike anything this team has faced.
In terms of Injuries, Oregon offensive lineman Carson York is doubtful for the game due to a knee injury while Arkansas State has no injuries to report.
The Public Bets are strongly behind the home Ducks of Oregon. The host team is getting 76% of the wagers with odds of -37 against Arkansas State.
