The Tigers were expected to plummet last season following the championship after losing many key pieces, including quarterback Cam Newton, but the Tigers still found a way to get to 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the SEC. This season, Auburn returns 17 total starters for fourth-year coach Gene Chizik.
According to oddsmakers, Auburn has 100/1 odds to win the 2013 BCS National Championship as well has 22/1 odds to win the SEC Championship and 12/1 odds to win the SEC West Division.
Once again, Auburn will be dealing with a new quarterback, as sophomore Kiehl Frazier is taking over. Frazier saw very limited action last year for an offense that scored just 25.7 points per game and had just 156 passing yards per contest. Frazier does have Auburn’s four leading receivers back from the 2011 squad, including starting running back Onterio McCalebb, who will handle the bulk of the carries this year following the dismissal of Michael Dyer, who rushed for 1,242 yards in 2011.
Defensively, Auburn wasn’t too bad last season, holding opponents to 28.9 points and 408 yards per game in a stacked SEC. The Tiger have 9 starters back on defense, including the entire defensive line. Junior end Corey Lemonier had 9.5 sacks in 2011 with 15 quarterback hurries. He is back to lead this unit, which needs to improves on its rushing defense, that allowed 189 yards per game last season.
When it comes to the schedule, Auburn doesn’t get many breaks. The Tigers open with Clemson in Atlanta to kickoff the season and then host LSU a few weeks later in a key SEC contest. The Tigers do get the likes of Georgia and Arkansas at home as well, but close the season on the road against rival, and defending national champion, Alabama.
