According to oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com, Oklahoma is a 7/2 favorite to win the 2012 BCS National Championship. The Sooners crushed UConn 48-20 as a 14.5-point favorite in the 2011 Fiesta Bowl.
Bob Stoops’ program received a huge boost when wide receiver Ryan Broyles (who caught 13 passes and racked up 170 yards with a touchdown in the Fiesta Bowl) and linebacker Travis Lewis both decided to stay in school. Along with Broyles and quarterback Landry Jones, Oklahoma is stacked and ready to make a run at a title next season.
Conversely, Auburn took a huge hit with the Cam Newton’s decision to forego his senior season and head to the NFL. The Tigers also lost their most disruptive defender, as defensive tackle Nick Fairley has decided to go pro as well. Oddsmakers now recognize the Tigers’ as potential long shots to win next season and are 70/1 to win the 2012 title.
The team with the next best odds behind Oklahoma is Alabama, which is 15/2 to win the 2012 BCS National Championship. The Tide got a huge boost with the return of safety Mark Barron, who is their quarterback in the secondary. With his return, ‘Bama is certainly the team to beat in both the SEC and possibly even the nation.
The Tide will have more experience in their secondary next year, which is vital after the way they struggled last season in that area. A.J. McCarron will take over for Greg McElroy at quarterback, while Trent Richardson will step up for Mark Ingram (who is turning pro) at running back.
Another SEC team to watch out for in 2012 is LSU, as former Georgia quarterback Zach Mettenberger will push Jordan Jefferson for the starting job this spring. With players like Tyrann Mathieau, Sam Montgomery, Eric Reid and Morris Claiborne due back on defense, the Tigers could be tough to beat. LSU has opened at 12/1 to win the BCS title next season.
One of the mid-range long shots to keep an eye on this year is Ohio State. Five players – quarterback Terrelle Pryor, running back Dan Herron, receiver DeVier Posey, offensive tackle Mike Adams and defensive lineman Solomon Thomas – are suspended for the start of the 2011 season, but the Buckeyes could easily stay undefeated until those players return. If they can, their 20/1 odds offer great value.
