The Crimson Tide will be seeking its third national title under sixth-year coach Nick Saban. Cleary a power in the SEC, Alabama has one of the best tracks to get to the title game by winning the conference. The SEC West seems to be a two-horse race between Bama and LSU, and oddsmakers agree.
According to oddsmakers, Alabama has 11/5 odds to win the SEC, just like LSU, and both have 8/5 odds to win the SEC West. Alabama has slightly shorter odds to win the BCS, as Alabama is 5/1 to win it all again. The over/under for wins this year has been set at 10.5.
Alabama has six starters back on offense, but loses a number of key skill position players. One player that is back is quarterback A.J. McCarron, who threw for 2,634 yards and 16 TD’s a year ago. He wasn’t heavily relied on last season, but will be this year with new starting WR’s and a RB’s. He has been given 23/1 odds to win the Heisman Trophy this season. At running back, Bama loses Trent Richardson, but will have Eddie Lacy to handle the load. Lacy rushed for 674 yards and seven TD’s as a backup a year ago. Lacy has been given 85/1 odds to win the Heisman Trophy. Alabama does have four of its five starters back on the offensive line, which should make up for the loss at receiver and running back.
Defensively, Alabama has five starters back from the top defense in the country. Alabama allowed just 8.2 points and 184 yards per game. Three starters have been lost from the secondary, but Bama seems to have plenty of depth at the position. The strength will be in the front seven, which has four starters back. Alabama hasn’t allowed more than 80 rushing yards per game in three of the last four seasons.
When it comes to scheduling, Alabama opens the season against Michigan in Dallas and then heads to Arkansas just two weeks later. Alabama will also host the likes of Auburn this season while heading to Missouri, Tennessee, and LSU. Alabama has a tougher schedule than LSU this season and has to go to Baton Rogue. But, history has shown than even a 1-loss Alabama team can play for the national title.
