The Broncos had just another 1-loss season in 2011, falling a game shy of the Mountain West title to TCU. But, this season, the Horned Frogs are no longer part of the MWC, jumping to the Big 12. This leaves the door wide open for Boise State to run the conference table.
According to oddsmakers, the Broncos are the clear favorite to win the conference titles, as they have 1/3 odds. When it comes to the national title picture, Boise State has been given odds of 60/1 to win the 2013 BCS National Championship. Their over/under for wins this year has been set at 9.5.
Boise State has failed to win at least 10 games in all but one of their last 10 seasons. Chris Peterson has made a habit of winning games, but this year will be a new challenge, as they returns just 7 total starters from last year. The Broncos lose 9 starters on a defense that allowed just 18.7 points and 321 total yards in 2011.
Offensively, the Broncos lose iconic quarterback Kellen Moore, who holds nearly all school career passing records and was the NCAA all-time leader in passing TD’s. New quarterback Joe Southwick has big shoes to fill, but has three of Boise’s top four receivers back. The Broncos will need to find a new running back as well as Doug Martin and his 1,299 yards and 16 TD’s are gone. Senior D.J. Harper will likely get the bulk of the carries. He had nine scores on 557 yards last season. One area Boise should be strong in is the offensive line, as they have three starters back.
When looking at the schedule, Boise State starts with a few tough games, as it faces Michigan State on the road to kick off the season. The Broncos will also face BYU in non-conference play and head to Nevada in MWC play to close the season. If the new faces can quickly find their role with the team, Boise State should easily get to 10 wins. However, don’t look for the Broncos to run the table.
