Bob Stoops comes into his 14th season at Oklahoma with high expectations after somewhat of a disappointing season last year, going just 10-3 despite being a preseason favorite to win the national title. This season, the Sooners have 17 starters back and the team is again expected to do big things.
According to oddsmakers, Oklahoma has 8/1 odds to win the 2013 BCS National Championship as well as 1/1 odds to win the Big 12 Conference title. The over/under for wins has been set at 10.5 for the Sooners this season.
Oklahoma should have one of the top offenses in the country, as it returns a number of top skill position players, including senior quarterback Landry Jones. Jones threw for 4,463 yards and 29 TD’s last season. He is one of the top preseason contenders for the Heisman Trophy, getting 9/1 odds to win. Kenny Stills also is on that list. The Oklahoma receiver has 90/1 odds after catching 61 passes for 849 yards and 8 TD’s last year as a sophomore. Oklahoma also has four starters back on the offensive line and its top three rushers back from last season.
Defensively, Oklahoma struggled, allowing 376 yards per game. The team returns seven starters from that group, including three in the secondary. Cornerback Demontre Hurst might be the top defender back. He broke up 11 passes last season to earn 2nd Team All-Big 12 honors. The Sooners will have to replace both starting defense ends, which could impact the 40 sacks they totaled in 2011.
Getting to 11 wins is never easy, especially when there is not Big 12 Championship Game, leaving the possibility for only 13 wins at a maximum. The Sooners will host Notre Dame in their toughest non-conference game. Home Big 12 games include Kansas State, Baylor, and Oklahoma State while road trips have the Sooners going to Texas Tech, West Virginia, and TCU. Oklahoma also has its annual meeting with Texas in Dallas mid-season. Oklahoma will need some things to go right to get to 11 wins, but the potential is certainly there to do so.
