South Carolina Season Odds
COLUMBIA, SC (The Spread) – The South Carolina Gamecocks won 11 games last season despite losing one of their top players. Now that he’s back, what is in store for the 2012 College Football Season?

Steve Spurrier enters his eighth season with South Carolina and is coming off an 11-2 season with a bowl victory and a 6-2 record in the SEC. It was the highest win total in Spurrier’s time with the Gamecocks. They did all of this despite losing stud running back Marcus Lattimore for nearly half of the season due to an ACL injury.
Coming into this season, oddsmakers see South Carolina with 50/1 odds to win the 2013 BCS National Championship and 10/1 odds to win the SEC Championship. The Gamecocks also have 5/2 odds to win the SEC East and their over/under for wins has been set at 8.5.
South Carolina has 11 starters back this year, including six on offense. Connor Shaw is firmly planted as the quarterback this year after Stephen Garcia was kicked off the team for good following multiple incidents off the field. Shaw started nine games last year and threw for 1,446 yards with 14 TD’s and 6 INT’s. Lattimore is expected to be 100 percent and is one of the top backs in the country. He ran for 818 yards and 10 scores in seven games in 2011. He has been given 18/1 odds to win the 2012 Heisman Trophy.
Defensively, the Gamecocks have typically been strong over the year and last year they allowed just 18.4 points and 268 yards per game. Their passing defense was among the best in the country, allowing only 132 yards per contest. The unit returns five starters, including four of the front seven. The Gamecocks will have to replace three starters in the secondary.
The schedules isn’t too crazy for South Carolina, but it is an SEC schedule. Their toughest non-conference game is the rivalry road trip to Clemson. SEC games feature home games with Missouri, Georgia, Tennessee, and Arkansas, while the road games include LSU and Florida. Due to most of the games being at home, I think South Carolina can certainly be in the running to win nine games this season.
