After winning a share of the Big Ten title in the 2010 season, the Spartans followed that up by winning the first ever Legends Division title in 2011 and making the Big Ten Championship Game before losing a close contest to Wisconsin. Still, MSU beat Georgia in the Outback Bowl and seemed to take another step forward as a program, having won 11 games for two straight seasons.
According to oddsmakers, the Spartans have been given 15/2 odds to win the Big Ten this year and 9/2 odds to win the Legends Division. Oddsmakers also have given MSU 50/1 odds to win the 2013 BCS National Championship, while their over/under for wins has been set at 8.5
Mark Dantonio enters his sixth season with Michigan State and he brings back 15 starters this year, including 8 on a defense that should be right up there with the best in the nation. MSU allowed just 18.4 points and 277 yards per game last season and has all of its starting linebackers and cornerbacks back this season. Denicos Allen had a team-high 11 of the team’s 45 sacks in 2011, and is back at linebacker, along with defensive end William Gholston, who is shaping up to be a first round NFL Draft pick.
Offensively, the Spartans have some questions. While they return leading rusher Le’Veon Bell, who ran for 948 yards and 13 TD’s in 2011, they lose their starting quarterback and their top four receivers from a year ago. Junior Andrew Maxwell steps into the starting quarterback role, and Tennessee transfer, DeAnthony Arnett should help fill the void at receiver. Bell comes into the season with 120/1 odds to win the 2012 Heisman Trophy.
With the schedule, MSU doesn’t take it too easy. They open at home with Boise State, then head on the road to face in-state foe, Central Michigan, before hosting rival Notre Dame. Conference road trips include Wisconsin and bitter rival Michigan, who MSU has beaten four times in a row entering the season. The Spartans will host Ohio State and Nebraska as well. If Maxwell and the offense are unable to find their comfort zone early on, it could be a long season for MSU. They should be in every game with their defense, but winning them all is another story.
