The Cornhuskers came into the 2011 season, their first as part of the Big 10, with expectations to run through the Legends Division. Things didn’t quite work out that well, as Nebraska went 9-4 overall and just 5-3 in conference play. With a solid group of starters back, Bo Pelini expects more from his team in his fifth year as head coach.
According to oddsmakers, the Cornhuskers have 50/1 odds to win the 2013 BCS National Championship and 7/2 odds to win the Big Ten Championship. Nebraska also has odds of 2/1 to win the Legends Division of the Big Ten and their over/under for wins has been set at 8.5.
The Cornhuskers have a total of 15 starters back, including seven on both offense and defense. Offensively, Nebraska returns all the key skill position players from a group that averaged nearly 30 points and 400 yards per game. Quarterback Taylor Martinez is back to lead the offense after throwing for 2,089 yards and 13 TD’s while rushing for 874 yards and nine scores. Running back Rex Burkhead is also back. He rushed for 1,357 yards and 15 TD’s last season. Both men are on the Heisman Trophy watch list, as Burkhead has 35/1 odds to win and Martinez has 80/1 odds.
Defensively, Nebraska has seven starters back from a unit that held opponents to 23.4 points and just 192 passing yards per game. Despite losing their leading tackler from last year, the Cornhuskers have five of their front seven back. That should help improve on the 158 rushing yards that were allowed per game by Nebraska.
When it comes to the schedule, Nebraska only has one tough non-conference game in a road trip at UCLA on Sept. 8. Conference home games include Wisconsin and Michigan, but the Huskers have road trips to Ohio State and Michigan State. The schedule sets up somewhat favorably for Nebraska to get to 9 wins for the fifth straight year.
