BLACKSBURG, VA (The Spread) – The Virginia Tech Hokies have been largely the best team in the ACC for many years. Can the Hokies get back on top of the conference mountain this season?

Frank Beamer is now in his 26th season as head coach at Virginia Tech and he has picked up at least 10 wins in his last eight seasons, including last year’s 11-3 record. The Hokies lost in the ACC Championship Game and then suffered a loss in the Sugar Bowl, leaving many fans disappointed.
This year, oddsmakers see the Hokies as one of the ACC favorites again, as they have 3/1 odds to win the conference crown. Virginia Tech has been given 10/11 odds to win the ACC Coastal Division along with 40/1 odds to be the winner in the 2013 BCS National Championship Game. The over/under win total for the Hokies has been set at 9.
The Hokies have a total of 14 starters back this year, but just three on offense. Fortunately, one of those starters is quarterback Logan Thomas, who threw for 3,013 yards and 19 TD”s while also rushing for 469 yards and 11 scores. Thomas will have a young set of backs behind him and four new starters on the offensive line. It will be largely up to him to make things happen on offense for the Hokies, which is why he has 75/1 odds to win the 2012 Heisman Trophy.
Defensively, the Hokies should be very strong, as they have nine starters back from a unit that allowed just 17.6 points and 305 yards per contest. The defense will be led by a front seven that had 41 sacks in 2011 and all seven starters are back.
The schedule isn’t all that favorable for the Hokies. They open the year against Georgia Tech in a key ACC contest at home and them head to Pittsburgh just two weeks later. The Hokies also face Cincinnati in non-conference play while heading to North Carolina, Clemson, and Miami for road ACC games. They also face Florida State at home.
