MORGANTOWN, WV (The Spread) – The West Virginia Mountaineers are making the jump from the Big East to the Big 12 this year. Can the Mountaineers contend in this tougher conference?
View Current College Football Odds
The Mountaineers are in their second season under coach Dana Holgorsen after winning a share of the Big East last season. Now, WVU finds itself in the Big 12, where it is far from the clear favorite, like it often was in the Big East.
According to oddsmakers, West Virginia enters the season with 6/1 odds to win the Big 12 Championship, and the Mountaineers have been given 60/1 odds to win the 2013 BCS National Championship. When it comes to a win total, oddsmakers have set the over/under at 8.5.
West Virginia does come into the new conference with a lot of talent, as it returns 16 total starters, including 8 on offense. Quarterback Geno Smith is expected to be one of the best signal callers this year, as he threw for 4,385 yards and 31 TD’s in 2011. Oddsmakers see him as one of the favorites to win the 2012 Heisman Trophy, as he has 8/1 odds to win. Another WVU Heisman contender is receiver Tavon Austin, who has 150/1 odds. He caught 101 passes for 1,186 yards and eight TD’s in 2011.
Defensively, WVU has 6 starters back, but lose their leading tackler, leading sacker, and their interceptions leader from a season ago. Three starters are back on the defensive line, and they will need to help cut down on the 145 rushing yards allowed per game last season by WVU. The Mountaineers won’t be able to win many games if their defense can’t handle the wide open offenses of the Big 12.
For a schedule, WVU is light in non-conference play, taking on Marshall, James Madison and Maryland. Conference games at home include Baylor, Kansas State, TCU, and Oklahoma, but the Mountaineers will head to Oklahoma State and Texas this season.
