Bret Bielema enters his seventh year as head coach of the Badgers and he is coming off three-straight double-digit win seasons. The Badgers already enter the season with an edge in the Big Ten, as they are part of the Leaders Division, where Ohio State and Penn State are already eliminated from competing in the conference championship game. Wisconsin has a pretty easy road to get to the championship contest.
According to oddsmakers, Wisconsin has 2/1 odds to win the Big Ten Championship and 1/5 odds to win the Leaders Division. The Badgers have also been given 40/1 odds to win the 2013 BCS National Championship, along with an over/under of 9 wins for this season.
Wisconsin has 11 starters back this season, including five on offense. The Badgers lose quarterback Russell Wilson, but just like last year, they are taking on a transfer that can play right away. Former Maryland quarterback Danny O’Brien takes over under center for the Badgers. O’Brien threw for just 1,648 yards with 7 TD’s and 10 INT’s last year with the Terps, but he still is an experience quarterback under center. O’Brien will have the luxury of having running backs Montee Ball and James White at his disposal. Ball was a Heisman finalist last year as he rushed for 1,923 yards with 33 TD’s and also has six receiving scores. Ball is one of the favorites for the Heisman Trophy this year, as he has been given 6/1 odds to win. White rushed for 713 yards with six TD’s last season as well.
Defensively, Wisconsin allowed just 19 points and 316 yards per game last season. The Badgers have six starters back on defense, including two from a secondary that allowed only 164 passing yards per game in 2011. The defense will be led by linebacker Chris Borland, who was a First Team All-Big Ten selection after racking up 143 tackles with 16.5 tackles for loss last year.
When it comes to scheduling, Wisconsin has a light non-conference tilt, with the toughest game coming at Oregon State on Sept. 8. In Big Ten play, the Badgers will host the likes of Michigan State and Ohio State while taking road trips to Nebraska and Purdue. The schedule sets up nicely for Wisconsin to get to 10 wins once again.
