UTEP is coming off a 5-7 record in 2011 and entering its ninth season under coach Mike Price. Oklahoma went 10-3 last season. The Sooners have won all four meetings with UTEP by an average of 17 points.
Trends show that UTEP is just 2-9 against the point spread odds in their last 11 games against Big 12 opponents but 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against non-conference opponents. Oklahoma is 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 non-conference games.
Oddsmakers see Oklahoma as the favorite in this game, as the Sooners have odds of -31 points against UTEP. The over/under total has been set at 62.5 points (View Matchup). The opening odds had Oklahoma favored by 29 points. The spread has since been making a steady climb up to Oklahoma -31 points.
Oklahoma comes into the 2012 season with a lot of big expectations, especially because of senior quarterback Landry Jones. Jones threw for 4,463 yards and 29 TD’s in 2011 and he leads an Oklahoma offense that has eight starters back. The Sooners averaged just under 40 points per game a year ago and over 500 yards. Those numbers shouldn’t change much. Defensively, Oklahoma allowed only 22.1 points and 376 yards per game. The Sooners have seven starters back this year on defense.
UTEP had some offensive success a year ago, averaging 26.6 points and 381 yards per game. The Miners lose their top three rushers from 2011, but return quarterback Nick Lamaison, who threw for 1,718 yards and 12 scores last year. Defensively, UTEP allowed 30.3 points and 442 yards per game. The Miners lose six starters on defense, including four on the front seven. That will impact UTEP’s ability to improve on its 190 rushing yards allowed per game.
In terms of Injuries, UTEP receiver Devin Patterson is questionable to play because of a concussion. Oklahoma has suspended five players and running back Dominique Whaley is dealing with an ankle injury, but is probable to play.
The Public Bets are backing the Sooners in this contest, as Oklahoma is getting 87% of the wagers with point spread odds of -31 against UTEP on Saturday night.
