Kansas State put up a 10-3 record in 2011 after starting the year 7-0 and climbing to 10th in the national rankings. All three of Kansas State’s losses came against some of the best in the country last season in Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. This year, Kansas State is led by an offense that returns 8 starters and has veteran coach, Bill Snyder set for his 21st season as head coach of the Wildcats.
According to oddsmakers, Kansas State has been given 150/1 odds to win the 2013 BCS National Championship. Also, the Wildcats are listed with 12/1 odds to win the Big 12 Conference this season and their over/under for wins has been set at 7. Kansas State last won the Big 12 back in 2003.
Since Snyder returned to his post as Kansas State coach in 2009 after sitting out three years, Kansas State has increased its win total each year. In 2009 they went 6-6, in 2010 they went 7-6, and last year they won 10 games for the first time since 2003. The schedule won’t be easy with 9 conference games, including new members TCU and West Virginia, but the Wildcats do have a relatively light non-conference set with Missouri State, North Texas, and Miami.
What the Wildcats do have in their favor is one of the top quarterbacks in the country in senior Collin Klein. Klein has hit big with fantasy players due to his 2011 season that saw him thrown for 1,918 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for 1,141 yards and 27 scores. Klein is one of two 1,000-yard rushers back for Kansas State and he also has his six of his top seven receivers back from 2011. The big touchdown numbers have made Klein a player to watch for the 2012 Heisman Trophy. He is currently listed with 75/1 odds to win the award.
Defensively, Kansas State brings back six starters from a unit that allowed 27.9 points and 395 yards per game. Though those numbers are alarming, they were an improvement from 2010 and the second best totals in Kansas State’s last five seasons.
