The Horned Frogs join West Virginia as the two new teams in the Big 12 this year. The Horned Frogs enter this big jump in competition having not lost a conference game in their last three years of operation as part of the Mountain West Conference.
According to oddsmakers, TCU has 100/1 odds to win the 2013 BCS Championship Game, but they have just 11/2 odds to win the Big 12 Championship in their first year in the conference. For an over/under win total, the Horned Frogs have been set at 7.5
Head Coach Gary Patterson returns 11 starters in his 12th year as head coach of TCU. Though that doesn’t sound like much, TCU does have a lot of offensive talent back, including the top five rushers and top three receivers from the 2011 season. Leading that offense will be junior quarterback Casey Pachall, who threw for 2,921 yards and 25 touchdowns last year and has been given 125/1 odds to win this year’s Heisman Trophy.
When it comes to the defense, TCU has just five starters back, with three of those starters coming on the defensive line. Defensive end Stansly Maponga had nine sacks in the 2011 season and is back for his junior year to lead the unit. As a team, TCU posted 40.8 points per game while allowing just 21.5 per contest in 2011. Both were drops from the 2010 team, and you can expect those numbers to drop again in the Big 12.
For the win total, the concern for TCU is the new, tougher schedule. The Horned Frogs should start fast, with games against Grambling State, Kansas, and Virginia to kickoff the year, but the end of the season is a gauntlet, and probably the toughest in the conference. The Horned Frogs final five games are at Oklahoma State, at West Virginia, vs. Kansas State, at Texas, and at home against Oklahoma. For the Frogs to get 8 runs this year, they will need to win their first 7 and at least one of these games. In program history, TCU is just 1-28 against Texas and 2-5 against Oklahoma.
