According to oddsmakers, the 2012 BCS runner-up, LSU, is the favorite to win it all next season. The Tigers have been given 4/1 odds to win the title. Other short odds to win are Alabama (6/1), USC (7/1), Oregon (8/1), and Oklahoma (8/1).
LSU has won three national titles in program history, the last coming in 2007 under current coach Les Miles. The Tigers went undefeated in the 2011 regular season to reach the 2012 title game, but were manhandled 21-0 to Alabama. Clearly the path to the title game is winning the SEC, but LSU will have to get by Alabama to do so.
Alabama has won 14 national titles and two under coach Nick Saban, including the 2012 title. The Tide have made a BCS bowl in three of the last four seasons and will lose some key players, but they tend to be able to reload through recruiting quite easily.
USC has won 11 national titles, the last coming in 2004. The Trojans are coming off postseason ban and will be eligible to win the national title in the 2012 season. Aiding in that will be the return of quarterback Matt Barkley. Barkley may come into the season as the top quarterback in the country.
Oregon has never won the national championship, but they reached the title game in 2011. The Ducks have established a solid foundation for a program, winning the Pac-12 the last three years, but with USC back in the mix, it could be a tougher road this year. The Ducks have played in a BCS bowl the last three seasons.
Oklahoma has won seven national titles, the last came in 2000 under current coach Bob Stoops. The Sooners will have quarterback Landry Jones returning to give them a high-powered offense, but Oklahoma has been notorious for losing games they shouldn’t during the season and damaging their chances to play for a title.
