According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Horned Frogs are now 17-point road favorites versus the Golden Gophers after opening as 14-point favorites. As for the total, it opened at 57.5 and that’s where the number currently sits.
Even though TCU covered easily as a 6-point home favorite, QB Trevone Boykin struggled in Week 2 versus Minnesota last year. CFB Film Room notes that Boykin only completed 5-of-17 attempts of 10-plus yards downfield, which was his worst percentage of the season.
Coach Gary Patterson also revealed Tuesday that TCU will be missing two defensive players for tonight’s game, although he did not reveal who or why. As Carlos Mendez of the Star-Telegram notes, the Horned Frogs’ depth chart did not have the names of defensive end James McFarland (who led the team in sacks last year with seven) or cornerback DeShawn Raymond. Patterson’s 4-2-5 defense is one of the best in the country but if it’s missing key pieces then Minnesota could keep the game close.
Finally, the Horned Frogs are also banged up offensively, as Deante’ Gray is doubtful after undergoing knee surgery this spring. It could take TCU a week or two to get into a rhythm offensively, so take the points tonight.
