Before we make our pick for this Week 6 matchup, let’s check out the odds.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have made Michigan a 4.5-point favorite over Michigan State in Week 6. The over/under total for this game has been set at 65.5 points.
Both of these teams enter Saturday’s game with identical 5-0 records, which is obviously why both are ranked, too. They’re also both 3-2 against the spread, with Michigan sporting a 2-1 ATS record at home this being Michigan State’s first road test of the year.
The Wolverines are averaging 41.5 points per game this season thanks in large part to Heisman Trophy candidate Denard Robinson. They’re allowing 25.4 points per game, however, so the Spartans (36.2 PPG offensively) could take advantage of a weak Michigan defense.
The Pick:
The points per game for and against stats above certainly factor into my pick for this game. The over is 4-1 in the last five meetings between these two teams when the games have been played in Michigan, and is 7-3-1 in the last 11 meetings overall. The total has also gone over in four of the Wolverines’ last five games as a favorite and is 4-0 in Michigan State’s last four conference games. Given how poorly Michigan has played defensively this year, the fact that this is Michigan State’s first game on the road and considering how explosive both offense’s can be, the over is the play here.
