Akron Zips Game Notes
Akron redshirt freshman QB Zach Gibson completed 18-of-30 passes for just 125 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in Wednesday’s 58-13 loss to Western Michigan. Gibson saw a bit of action last season as well. Though just a true freshman at the time, Gibson started a handful of games towards the end of the year, though he finished with just one touchdown to three interceptions and a 50.6% completion rate. Gibson increased his completion rate in this one, but failed to find any plays down the field to get things going. Gibson’s longest completion of the day went for just 14 yards, which is stunning compared to WMU QB Kaleb Eleby, who completed multiple 60-plus yard passes. Akron will square off against Ohio next week.
Ohio Bobcats Game Notes
Ohio redshirt freshman QB Kurtis Rourke completed 12-of-19 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-27 loss to Central Michigan on Wednesday. Rourke (6’3/211) served as the primary quarterback, but gave way to Armani Rogers in running packages. The UNLV transfer Rogers only hit one of three passes for four yards, but was effective in short yardage situations gaining 32 yards on seven totes. The Rourke family legacy seems to be solidly in place as he played mistake free football in his debut, even if he was in negative rushing territory which was his brother’s main attribute. The Bobcats’ offense only recorded 345 total yards and 16 first downs, so there is clearly work to do ahead of next Wednesday’s game against Akron.
Akron vs. Ohio Betting Prediction
The Zips have covered the spread in four of the last five meetings in this series while the underdog is 5-1 at the betting window in the last six meetings between these two teams. Ohio, meanwhile, is 3-7 against the spread in its last 10 conference games dating back to last season, is 3-8 against the number in its last 11 games overall and is winless at the betting window in its last six games. The Bobcats aren’t strong enough defensively to be favored by over four touchdowns, regardless of the opponent.
